Kythera, differently

You don’t come here just to see — you come to feel.

Kythera. The island of Heavenly Aphrodite, of nature and symbolic beauty.

There are places that don’t just exist on the map — they live in the imagination and the soul.

Kythera is one such place: a secret world between the Ionian and the Aegean, where nature, myth, and memory converse in silence.

According to Hesiod, this is where Heavenly Aphrodite was born — not the goddess of fleeting desire, but of spiritual love, aesthetic elevation, and cosmic harmony. Or simply put: the Great Goddess. And her presence still lingers in the landscape — in the sea-carved rocks, the fragrant myrtle bushes around forgotten chapels, the birds dancing over the olive trees, and the Mediterranean light caressing ancient ruins.

What to see in Kythera

  • Kythira Town (Chora) - Discover the impressive Venetian castle with panoramic views over Kapsali.
  • Archaeological Museum of Kythera
A modern re-exhibition showcasing iconic artifacts and a fresh, engaging approach.
  • Katouni Bridge - A grand stone bridge from the British era, with 13 arches — the largest of its kind in Greece.
  • Mylopotamos Waterfalls – Stone watermills, caves, and the famous “Fonissa” (Murderess) waterfall in a lush ravine.
  • Panagia Myrtidiotissa - The most important pilgrimage site on the island, home to the miracle-working icon of the Virgin Mary.
  • Paleochora - The island’s former Byzantine capital, destroyed in 1537 by the pirate Barbarossa — now a haunting and beautiful archaeological site.

Local Flavors

Kythera isn’t just to be seen — it’s to be tasted. The island’s traditional cuisine is based on simple, authentic Mediterranean ingredients, prepared with care and hospitality.

  • Kytherian Olive Oil – Produced from the ancient “Koroneiki” variety, thriving in the island’s unique microclimate.
  • Thyme Honey – Thick, aromatic, and considered among the best in Greece.
  • Kytherian Rusks – Traditional baked goods made with local olive oil.
  • Fatourada - A sweet, spiced liqueur made with tsipouro, cinnamon, clove, and sugar.
  • Herbs of Kythera – Mountain tea, thyme, oregano, and sage — dried and ready for tea or cooking.
